Saltpeter Ore can be found just in desert. It is found just below the surface layer in large clusters (Caliche), but there are usually 2-3 spawns per cluster on the surface as well. Sometimes you can see saltpeter on the ground.

Saltpeter has the interesting feature in that it will respawn over time if the site is properly restored after mining. Specifically, it requires three layers of sand on the surface. Too much air or any non-sand block will prevent Saltpeter from spawning in adjacent blocks. It is safe to mine all the Saltpeter in the area at once, it will still respawn even if there is no Saltpeter remaining. The entire cluster should respawn in about two hours.

When broken it drops several Saltpeter. It is not unusual for a single cluster to yield over ten stacks of Saltpeter.

Saltpeter is a key ingredient in making Gunpowder and Fertilizer (Forestry), though there may be other uses in the future.
